Astragalus
grows up to a foot and a half high and is native to the northern areas of China. Studies have shown that this herb with its white and yellow flowers helps boost the body’s natural immune system, promoting both enhanced antibody formation and white cell proliferation. Because of these properties, astragalus is particularly useful for patients with immune depression that is associated with chemotherapy and such conditions as leukopenia and HIV.
Better known in China by the name Huang Qui, astragalus is also valuable in improving cardiac function in patients
suffering from angina and heart failure, helping both the heart’s muscle contractions and output. Being a natural diuretic, it helps ease the workload of the heart and decreases edema. Beyond the benefits it bestows upon the heart, astragalus is also known for aiding digestion and protecting the liver.
With antiviral and antioxidant attributes to boot, astragalus is a particularly outstanding herb in Mother Nature’s arsenal against disease. Even in healthy individuals, it’s known for its energizing effect on the body and for increasing the body’s overall resistance.‡
